چکیده

We show (in confirmation of previous work) using oneand three-dimensional models that extratropical zonal wind anomalies, produced by fluctuating Rossby wave forcing in the troposphere, appear first in the stratosphere, and migrate downward into the troposphere. By systematically eliminating wave reflection and “downward control” through an induced meridional circulation, it is shown that the downward migration is dependent on neither process. Rather, the mechanism appears to rely on local wave, mean-flow interaction just as in the similar downward migration evident in the tropical quasi-biennial oscillation. In particular, these results imply that the similar downward migration observed in the Arctic Oscillation should not be taken to indicate any controlling influence of the stratosphere on the troposphere.

The Influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on the Troposphere in Winter in a Hierarchy of Models. Part I: Simplified Dry GCMs

A dry primitive equation model is used to explain how the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the tropical stratosphere can influence the troposphere, even in the absence of tropical convection anomalies and a variable stratospheric polar vortex. QBO momentum anomalies induce a meridional circulation to maintain thermal wind balance. This circulation includes zonal wind anomalies that extend fr...

Observed Relationships between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the Extratropical Zonal-Mean Circulation

There is increasing evidence indicating that the climate response to variations in the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) includes not only thermally forced zonal wind anomalies in the subtropics but also eddy-driven zonal wind anomalies that extend into the mid–high latitudes of both hemispheres. In this study, new insights into the observed seasonally varying signature of ENSO in the extratr...

The Signature of the Annular Modes in the Tropical Troposphere

The extratropical annular modes are coupled with a distinct pattern of climate anomalies that spans the circulation of the tropical troposphere. The signature of the annular modes in the tropical troposphere exhibits a high degree of equatorial symmetry. It is associated with upper-tropospheric zonal wind anomalies centered about the equator, midtropospheric temperature anomalies located ;208N ...

Danish Climate Centre Report 03 - 04 Downward propagation and statistical forecast of the near surface wind

We investigate the potential for utilising the downward propagation of anomalies from the stratosphere to the troposphere in extended range statistical forecasts of the near surface zonal mean zonal wind at 60 • N. It is found that the inclusion of stratospheric information increases the skill of the forecast on lead times larger than 5 days. Similar skill can not be obtained if the forecast mo...

Is the stratospheric quasi‐biennial oscillation affected by solar wind dynamic pressure via an annual cycle modulation?

[1] In this study, statistical evidence of a possible modulation of the equatorial stratospheric quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) by the solar wind dynamic pressure is provided. When solar wind dynamic pressure is high, the QBO at 30–70 hPa is found to be preferably more easterly during July–October. These lower stratospheric easterly anomalies are primarily linked to the high‐frequency compone...
